From Industrial Powerhouse to Thriving Business Hub: The Story of Lansbury Business Estate
Long before Lansbury Business Estate became home to over 80 businesses, it was the headquarters of a pioneering British manufacturer – Crater Controls.
Founded in 1947 by visionary engineer Arthur Craven, Crater Controls was at the forefront of British engineering. The company supplied high-precision electrical components used across multiple industries, playing a crucial role in the UK’s post-war technological boom. Their innovations powered everything from factory machinery to household appliances, cementing their reputation as a leader in British manufacturing.
By the 1950s, Crater Controls had outgrown its original workshop in St Johns, Woking. To keep up with demand, Arthur Craven acquired a six-acre site in Knaphill in 1956, transforming an old brickworks into a modern production facility. For decades, the company thrived, driving innovation and supporting skilled British workers.
However, by the late 1970s, British manufacturing was facing growing challenges. Cheaper imports and shifting technologies made it harder to compete. Crater Controls fought to adapt, but in 1980, disaster struck. A fire tore through part of the factory, dealing a devastating blow. Faced with rising costs and a changing industry, the decision was made to transform the site into something new.
Thus, Lansbury Business Estate was born. What had once been a single manufacturing powerhouse became a diverse business hub, offering flexible office and industrial spaces for companies of all sizes.
Today, the estate is proud to support British businesses as much as possible, continuing the legacy of innovation, resilience, and homegrown success that shaped its past.
